Until October, the PSP detained 4,384 drivers for excessive alcohol consumption and registered 3,602 administrative offenses for the same reason, for a total of 7,986 infractions, a “considerable increase” compared to the same period in 2024.

According to data released this Tuesday, November 25th, by the Public Security Police, between January 1st and October 31st of this year, the PSP carried out 20,139 road prevention and inspection operations and questioned 604,529 drivers.

In these actions, PSP operators carried out 169,101 blood alcohol tests, having recorded 7,986 infractions related to driving under the influence of alcohol, an increase of 1,811 compared to the same period in 2024, which is equivalent to an average of 26 infractions per day.

The PSP states that these infractions resulted in the arrest of 4,384 drivers for driving with excess alcohol (above 1.2 grams per liter in the blood), 1,129 more than in the same period of 2024, and 3,602 administrative offenses for driving under the influence of alcohol (682 more than in the same period last year).

According to the PSP, this number of detected infractions reflects “a considerable increase” compared to the same period of the previous year (+ 29.3%), as “a result of the reinforcement and intensification of road prevention and inspection operations throughout the country.

The PSP recalls that several scientific studies demonstrate that driving under the influence of alcohol causes various disorders, particularly at the cognitive level and information processing, as well as changes in the ability to react to unforeseen events and motor incoordination.

This security force also warns of the increased risks of driving under the influence of alcohol, recalling that “with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 g/l, the risk of suffering a serious or fatal accident doubles” and that “accidents resulting from driving under the influence of alcohol are particularly serious”.
